Malawi-Mozambique Bilateral Talks

A Ministerial Meeting under the Malawi-Mozambique Bilateral Trade Agreement was held in Tete Province, Mozambique on 4th March 2016. The delegation of the Republic of Malawi was led by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Honourable Joseph Mwanamvekha MP and the Mozambican delegation was led by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Honourable Ernesto Max Tonela.

The Bilateral meeting agenda focused on transit and logistics issues; customs cooperation, and other trade facilitation issues including the prevalence of non-tariff measures that have remained between the two countries.

More specifically the meeting embarked on resolving outstanding areas including Communication; transit Fees Levied on Chemical Products, other Fees and Charges (Parking Fees and Charges for Small Rent-a-Car Vehicles), Simplified Trade Regime (STR), Yellow Card Scheme, Memorandum of Understanding on Standards, Memorandum of Understanding on Trade Promotion, Participation in each other’s Trade Fairs and establishment of committees (complaints handling committee and committee of fees and charges).

Delegations from the two countries agreed to conclude the establishment of Simplified Trade Regime (STR) between Malawi and Mozambique within the next couple months. It was agreed that there will be a mid-term review meeting in three months to review progress.
