MBS bans Frozy fizzy Drink on Malawi market
Malawi Bureau of standards (MBS) has banned importation, distribution, sale and use of Frozy fizzy drink imported from Mozambique on the basis that it does not conform to relevant Malawi standards (MS).
MBS has since advised Malawians to desist from buying and consuming the product forthwith until after further verification of conformity assessments to address the shortfalls.
According to MBS, through its conformance assessments, it established that Frozy soft drinks do not conform with requirements of MS 18-carbonated soft drinks specification and MS 19 on labelling standard for prepackaged foods.
MBS said conformance assessment results on Frozy drinks produced high levels of citric acid in the range of 2240 to 5376mg/kg (against 3000mg/kg maximum specification) and sodium benzoates, in the range of 3248 to 4256mg/kg ( against 1000mg/kg maximum specification) according to a statement signed by MBS Director General Mr. Davlin Chokazinga.
Meanwhile, MSB has requested importers, distributors and sellers of Frozy to “openly” declare to the bureau quantities of Frozy drinks currently in their custody and agree on appropriate handling and disposal procedures with immediate effect.
Frozy has recently infiltrated the Malawi market and others have gone a step further to serving it during weddings, engagements and other ceremonies.
Recently, Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) was quoted in the media as having warned that it will impose heavy fines on traders who are smuggling Frozy into the country instead of using the existing trade protocol between two countries.
